HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) – The Copper Country Rock and Mineral Club kicked off its annual Gem & Mineral show this afternoon at Houghton Elementary School.
The show draws in rock and mineral enthusiasts from near and far. Organizers are unsure how long it has been running, but they say it’s been decades.
Visitors drop in to view displays and buy and sell with vendors. The show also provides presentations, a silent auction and a metal detector treasure hunt for children.
According to Club Member and Geology Professor Nathalie Brandes, rocks and minerals appeal to people in several ways.
“They’re not just scientific specimens…they are, they have interesting stories to tell about the earth,” said Brandes. “But they’re also just absolutely beautiful, like works of art that nature made, and I think that makes people like coming here and seeing those.”
The show will continue throughout the weekend.
It starts at 10 a.m. on both days and closes at 6 p.m. on Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday.
