Fire at Salina energy plant prompts heavy emergency response

    August 28, 20241 Min Read

SALINA, Kan. (KWCH) – A fire to an energy plant in Salina prompted a heavy emergency response Wednesday afternoon. Viewer-submitted photos and video footage show dark smoke billowing from a building at Stryten Energy, a battery manufacturer.

Salina Fire Marshal Joe Kvacik said the plant makes car batteries but Wednesday’s fire didn’t happen in the area where those batteries are produced. Crews fought to moderate heavy smoke and fire inside the building. It took them about two hours to get the fire under control.

“Smoke conditions were significant inside. They made an aggressive attack and got it knocked down,” Kvacik said. “Being a large facility, it takes a lot of crews and a lot of coordination.”

An employee said he was in the breakroom when he heard alarms and instructions from supervisors to evacuate. He said the fire began in an area where there weren’t many employees.

The fire marshal confirmed that no one was injured. The investigation continues to determine what started the fire.
