McLean County to collect 7% more in property taxes this year

    April 28, 20252 Mins Read

BLOOMINGTON (25News Now) – McLean County landowners will receive their property tax bills this week, and are being asked to pay $462.3 million this year, up 7% from property taxes collected last year, with the largest portion funding education.

In a release, McLean County Treasurer Rebecca McNeil’s office said about 61.4% of the average tax bill, or almost $284 million, will be collected to fund the county’s school districts.

Officials said the total value of taxable property in McLean County is $5.582 billion, with a nearly 13% increase on residential property, a 5.7% increase on commercial property, and an 8% increase on farmland. The release said the increases are due in part to growth in the county’s commercial and industrial base.

The amount individuals must pay is based on the assessed value of their land.

Taxpayers won’t have to worry this year about paying to fund a new countywide airport authority. Gov. JB Pritzker signed into law legislation two years ago allowing the authority running Central Illinois Regional Airport to tax property in the entire county instead of just Bloomington and Normal. “That move is now expected to affect the property tax bills payable in 2026,” the treasurer’s office said.

The amount collected to fund McLean County government averages almost 11% of each tax bill, according to McNeil’s office. The county treasurer bills, collects, and distributes property tax dollars to more than 200 units of local government, such as schools, municipalities, townships, libraries, and fire protection districts. Each tax bill is itemized.

The treasurer’s office also said the six wind farm turbine operations in the county will add $11.8 million.

Property tax due dates are June 4 and Sept. 4, with late payments facing financial penalties of 1.5% interest, and a tax sale if taxes aren’t paid by Nov. 5.
