CANYON, Texas (KFDA) – The Canyon City Commission passed an ordinance Monday to give property tax exemptions to childcare facilities in 2025.
The city says qualifying childcare facilities will not pay the city’s ad valorem property taxes. The ordinance will grant the tax exemptions under Senate Bill 1145.
“The city believes that anything we can do to support childcare in our community helps our families directly,” said Canyon Mayor Gary Hinders. “This property tax exemption will help Canyon’s overall economy and community growth.”
According to the city, qualifying facilities must participate in the Texas Workforce Commission’s Texas Rising Star Program and at least 20% of the total number of children enrolled receive subsidized childcare services through the Texas Workforce Commission.
The city says facilities must apply for the exemption by filling out Form 50-844 on the Texas Comptroller’s website.
The application opens each year for new facilities to apply with a deadline of May 1.
“We’re excited for this ordinance because childcare is crucial for our existing and growing community,” said Canyon Economic Development Corp. Director Stephanie Tucker. “When businesses are looking to move or expand, affordable childcare is always a top question. This tax exemption will attract and retain families and businesses alike.”
