:: Hector Lopera, Rescued miner
“Since we had communication, it gave us a lot of peace of mind because we knew they were working, they sent us food, so everything was fine.”
:: Duvian Mena, Rescued miner
“I’m happy, thrilled to see that we all made it out alive. Thank God, all the staff down there and the families were hoping to see their loved ones. It’s moving to see that we all came out alive and well. Thanks be to God.”
The operation, involving local emergency responders and teams from Canadian multinational Aris Mining, concluded with all miners reported in good condition.
Communication was established with the trapped miners on the first day, allowing rescuers to send food and reassure them during the operation, according to rescued miner Hector Lopera. The miners expressed relief and gratitude after emerging, with one describing the rescue as “moving”.
Colombia’s National Mining Agency said on Tuesday (September 23) that a collapse of about 15 meters at the mine’s main entrance had triggered the emergency.
