After more than 22 years on WWE television, John Cena is finally calling it quits.
In a surprise appearance at SummerSlam 2024, Cena announced that he is retiring from professional wrestling. However, he revealed that he’ll be going out with a bang.
Starting January of 2025, Cena will take part in a retirement tour where he’ll spend the entire year with WWE, saying thank you to the company and fans that made him who he is today.
While fans would want to see many opponents duke it out with Cena, one current WWE superstar and former world champion is ready to throw his own hat in the ring.
During a live appearance on The Ringer Wrestling Show podcast during Fanatic Fest, Drew McIntyre revealed that he wanted to face Cena during his retirement tour.
McIntyre may seem like a strange choice for Cena’s retirement tour since he has never directly fought the Doctor of Thuganomics in a singles match, but he does have a connection to him through his current rival CM Punk. And McIntyre would love to retire them both at once.
“Cena is coming back for his year-long return which is going to be awesome,” Mcintyre said. “I don’t know if I’m figured in the plans, but I guarantee I’ll be pushing and I’ll be nudging them left and right to make it happen because the amount of stories I’ve got about Punk and things that happened when I was younger, I’ve got tenfold on him.”
“There’s never been a one-on-one match,” McIntyre continued. “If I have to drive management crazy, I’ll drive them crazy, drive John crazy. I’m going to get that match and I’ll tear them apart on the microphone, which not many people can do in the ring, and send him packing in a happy retirement and hopefully Punk along with him.”
CM Punk is often considered one of Cena’s greatest opponents, and it is likely that the two will battle each other at some point next year. Given that McIntyre has had it out for Punk ever since he debuted this year, there’s no doubt that Cena will wind up in his crosshairs as well.
This past year, McIntyre has proven time and again that he is a man who gets what he wants. If he says that he wants to face Cena, it’s safe to assume that it’s going to happen.
