Somali Success Stories Conference Celebrates the Growth of the Nation’s Fintech Industry

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Highlighting the rapid development of Somalia’s financial technology sector, the third annual Somali Success Stories Conference concluded on October 17 at Sahal Hall in Mogadishu. Organized by Hormuud Telecom, the event gathered government officials, leading business figures, policymakers, academics, and industry experts to explore the country’s evolving fintech landscape.

The conference highlighted the pivotal role of financial technology in transforming Somalia’s economic landscape. Presentations and discussions delved deep into the opportunities and challenges facing fintech, setting the stage for a comprehensive exploration of what financial technology could mean for Somalia’s tomorrow.

Ahmed Mohamud Yusuf, the CEO of Hormuud Telecom, kicked off the proceedings with an address that set the tone for the day’s discourse. “We are here to celebrate and delve into the advancements in financial technology, which are vital for our economic growth,” Yusuf declared, emphasizing the strategic importance of fintech in Somalia’s economic narration.

Mahmoud Abdikarin, Chairman of the Somali Chamber of Commerce & Industry, echoed this sentiment, stressing, “The contributions of our fintech companies are critical for fostering innovation and nurturing economic growth.” His words resonated with the audience, underscoring the sector’s significance in the national economic fabric.

Somalia’s Minister of Communications and Technology, Mohamed Adam Moalim Ali, provided further insight, highlighting the digital transformation. “From cash to mobile payments, technology has fundamentally changed how we conduct business,” he remarked, illustrating the shift towards a cashless society.

The conference culminated with Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre presenting appreciation awards to fintech companies recognized for their contributions. “Hormuud has been instrumental not just in telecom but in driving economic development,” Barre stated, marking his second appearance at the event, which has become a pivotal annual gathering.

Last year’s conference, BGS2023, showcased Somalia’s diverse local products, from seafood to livestock, signaling the country’s untapped potential. This year’s focus on fintech underscores Somalia’s resilience and the private sector’s integral role in economic recovery and innovation.

The telecom giant – Hormuud stands at the forefront of this digital revolution, spearheading initiatives that align with Somalia’s increasing demand for sophisticated financial services. The conference did not just celebrate past achievements but also looked forward, envisioning a future where Somalia’s economy is bolstered by fintech’s capabilities.
