New Delhi: Delhi Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW) has arrested a person in connection with the ongoing investigation into an alleged Rs 72 crore fraud involving a fintech unicorn BharatPe.
The suspect has been identified as Amit Bansal. The case was registered on the complaint of the fintech company in 2023 — against its co-founder — and other people.
According to the remand copy, the main complaint involves payments amounting to Rs 72 crore made by the former directors of complainant company to non-existent firms between 2019 and 2021.An inquiry identified 33 such non-existing vendors, and it was discovered that the accused and his brother were connected to these ghost companies. These firms used the same email address.
The remand copy has detailed the accused’s involvement with these fictitious GST firms and argued that police custody is crucial to trace the proceeds of the crime, recover the computer or laptop used for generating fake invoices, and unravel the broader conspiracy. Additionally, the custody is necessary to identify the actual beneficiaries of the funds paid by the complainant company, recover email trails, and analyse bank statements with the accused’s assistance.
