East Lothian Antiquarian & Field Naturalists’ Society has invited amateur historian David McLean to give a talk titled ‘The farm servants of South East Scotland 1750 to 1914’.
The talk is set for next Saturday (February 21) at 2.30pm at Holy Trinity Church on Church Street, Haddington.
The session will highlight the role these workers played alongside elite landowners to shape the agricultural revolution in East Lothian.
Mr McLean will detail the rural hierarchy, from ploughmen downwards, as well as explaining the primary farming tasks, the pay structures and the living conditions of farm workers.
Non-members are welcome to attend and are asked for a ‘modest’ cash donation.
