A significant piece of sci-fi movie history has sold at auction.
The bikini worn by Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) in the third installment of the original “Star Wars” trilogy, “Return of the Jedi,” sold at a recent Heritage Auctions engagement for $175,000, according to a company press release.
Bidding for the bikini from the 1983 film started at $34,000.
In 2016, Fisher shared her feelings about the bikini, made of metal, in an interview with NPR:
“It was like, ‘Where am I in all of this? ’ … I have to stay with the slug with the big tongue! Nearly naked, which is not a style choice for me. … It wasn’t my choice.
“When [director George Lucas] showed me the outfit, I thought he was kidding and it made me very nervous. I had to sit very straight because I couldn’t have lines on my sides, like little creases. No creases were allowed, so I had to sit very, very rigid straight.”
Also selling at the auction were items from the “Harry Potter” franchise.
A signature wand used by actor Daniel Radcliffe (who played the title character) in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” sold for $93,750. Radcliffe’s wand from the third movie in the series, “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” also sold at the auction, as did the wand used by Oscar winner Gary Oldman in the same film. Oldman portrayed Sirius Black.
