LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — After initially sending $5.4 million in refunds, NV Energy has filed paperwork to issue another $32.6 million to customers in payment for mistakes in billing, according to a Thursday news release.
The utility is also committing to hire a third party to independently review the company’s response to the revelation that is misclassified rates paid by 42,000 customers in apartments and other multifamily housing dating back to 2017.
“We regret the impact this error has caused our customers,” Brandon Barkhuff, NV Energy’s new president and CEO, said in a statement. He replaced previous CEO Doug Cannon in May.
“It’s important that we learn from this mistake and seek continuous improvement. We are committed to ensuring our systems and processes reflect accuracy and accountability moving forward and are implementing better procedures and controls to prevent this from happening again,” Barkhuff said.
The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada (PUCN) has to approve NV Energy’s proposal.
PUCN claims NV Energy overcharged thousands of customers over $17M
NV Energy said its proposal to refund $32.6 million includes interest, and it is for current and former customers retroactive to June 23, 2017.
Refunds are in the form of bill credits to active accounts and checks to former customers, according to the news release.
When the $5 million in refunds were issued, critics said they helped only a portion of those affected by the billing error.
The news release said, “NV Energy will continue to provide updates as the review progresses and encourages customers to visit www.nvenergy.com website for more information or to contact the company directly.”
