A mortar shell was discovered in an agricultural field in Hati Bandha Upazila, Lalmonirhat, this morning (28 November).
Workers uncovered the object while excavating soil in the middle of Goddimari Adarsha village in Goddimari Union.
Local resident Md Abul Hossain (63) was levelling his farmland using an excavator around 10:30am when the iron object, buried about three feet underground, was spotted.
The object, resembling a mortar shell or cannonball, caused panic among villagers. It is estimated to weigh three to four kilograms, with a length of 15 inches, a thickness of 10 inches, and a diameter of 2.5 inches. The marking “MK 17” was visible on its surface.
Locals immediately informed the police and local administration. Residents think the shell may date back to the Liberation War of 1971.
Hati Bandha Police Officer-in-Charge Mahmudunnabi said the object has been sent to a team of experts for inspection, and further action will be taken based on their advice.
