David Hayter, the voice of Snake in Metal Gear, confesses his regret about returning to Metal Gear Solid Delta

    August 23, 20253 Mins Read

The upcoming remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater will arrive next week. And, within this work of nostalgia and modernity, one of the most surprising details was the return of its original cast, with David Hayter and Lori Alan reprising their roles as Naked Snake and The Boss, respectively, and Cynthia Harrell once again performing the main theme of Snake Eater.

In a recent interview with Inverse, the three discussed the process of returning to work on Metal Gear Solid: Delta – Snake Eater, something they really didn’t expect. And although their work is minimal, as much of the original game is reused, there is something Hayter would have loved to do 20 years later.

“I do feel that I’m a little better of an actor now than I was then,” he laughed. “It was fine back in the day, but I would have loved to bring some of the knowledge that I’ve picked up over the past 20 years to it. But you don’t want the controller lines to be better acted all of a sudden, because that’ll take you out of the game.”

In the game, the cast returned to repeat some lines related to the tutorials, mentioning other types of buttons found on modern consoles. However, this does not dampen the actor’s hopes of one day reprising his role as Snake, should the opportunity arise.

“Anytime they ask me to be Snake, I’m in,” Hayter said. “It’s the definitive role in my life. It’s so complex and so profound, and there are so many different aspects to both him and Big Boss. So anytime it comes up, I’m down.”

    The importance of remakes

At another point in the interview, the importance of this type of work was discussed, with Lori Alan mentioning that “We’re so thrilled that there’s a different generation, yet another one that’ll be able to [experience Snake Eater] because it’s just epic and beautiful.” For his part, Hayter mentioned the importance of these games as a means of preservation. “A great game should be like a great movie or like a great album — it should live on. And a lot of times, because consoles and technology change, a lot of great games disappear. And so I’m just grateful that Konami is behind this in the way they are.”

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, starting on August 28. You can read our opinion, here.
