Kojima Had “Many Discussions” With Vince Zampella About A First-Person Metal Gear Solid

    February 12, 20262 Mins Read

Last December, Call of Duty veteran and Battlefield boss Vince Zampella perished in a car accident. Zampella had deep ties to the video game industry, and according to Hideo Kojima, he also had ideas about making Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid into a first-person game.

The Game Awards host and creator Geoff Keighley noted at DICE that Kojima revealed that he had “many discussions” with Zampella about a first-person MGS. It’s unclear how far those discussions went, since their collaboration never went forward.

Kojima did introduce a first-person mode in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, however players could only move around in a third-person view. The MGS franchise so heavily leans towards stealth that it might have been difficult to retain the game’s signature touches in first-person.

Kojima made these comments at DICE this week during a panel dedicated to honoring Zampella’s life and career. Keighley, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, Bethesda boss Todd Howard, EA executive Laura Miele, and other luminaries spoke at the event, which was called “Vince Zampella: Remembering A Titan.”

Near the end of January, Konami disclosed that the Metal Gear Solid franchise has now surpassed 65.5 million games sold after the release of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater last year. While that remake of MGS 3 has been very successful, series producer Noriaki Okamura has expressed skepticism about a potential remake of Metal Gear Solid 4.
