Stock Market Updates Today: The domestic equities markets on Tuesday witnessed a slightly weak opening after US President Donald Trump’s announcement to “substantially” raise tariffs on Indian goods. The BSE Sensex fell 351.6 points to trade at Rs 80,665.8 in the early trade, while the NSE Nifty slipped slightly by 101 points to 24,619.2 in the opening trade.

Among the 30 companies on the Sensex, 20 were trading in red during the morning trade. Among the top losers were BEL, Adani Ports, Infosys, HDFC Bank, Reliance, and Sun Pharma falling up to 1.37%.

Among the gainers were Axis Bank, SBI, UltraTech Cement, Maruti Suzuki India, Bharti Airtel rising up to 0.67%.

Broader markets also turned red after initial buying, with the BSE SmallCap trading lower by 0.07% and the BSE MidCap was down by 0.49%.

Sector-wise, the Nifty IT, Nifty FMCG, Nifty Financial Services, and Nifty Oil & Gas were trading in red falling by up to 0.33%. On the other hand, Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty Metal, Nifty Media, Nifty Pharma were trading in green rising by up to 0.30%.

V K Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist of Geojit Investments Ltd, said, “The latest tweet from President Trump that ‘I will be substantially raising US tariff on India’ for buying Russian oil is a big threat. If he walks his talk, the India-US relations will further strain and the impact on India’s exports to the US can be worse than thought earlier. India’s GDP growth and corporate earnings in FY26 also will be impacted. The market, still trading at elevated valuations, has not discounted such an eventuality.”

It remains to be seen how things evolve. India’s response, with facts, that “targeting India is unjustified and unreasonable” sends a message that India will not be making undue concessions and compromises. This means the market is in uncharted territory in the near term, he added.

“If US President Trump raises tariffs on India further the market will react negatively breaking the Nifty support of 24500. Investors may wait and watch for the developments to unfold. Moving some money to fixed income also can be thought of,” Vijayakumar added.

Trump on Monday again threatened to substantially raise tariffs on Indian goods, citing India’s continued purchases and resale of Russian oil. India’s foreign ministry responded, saying it will take all necessary steps to protect its national interests and economic security. Trump had already imposed higher-than-expected 25% tariffs on Indian imports last week, while US officials continue to highlight multiple hurdles that are delaying a trade deal with India.

    Technical View

Though Nifty failed to breach the previous day’s high, the successful close above 24670, the key pivot pencilled in yesterday encourages us to continue playing upsides. “We have eyes on 24900 initially followed by 25261. Slippage past 24670 could however force us abandon the upswing expectations, but a collapse is less expected today,” said Anand James, Chief Market Strategist, Geojit Investments Limited.
