Core Technology in Greensboro hosts free camp to students to learn more about STEM

    August 13, 20252 Mins Read

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Core Technology Molding Corporation in Greensboro hosted a camp for local students to learn more about careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, better known as STEM.

The program is called “Molding Kids for Success,” and it’s a free camp that combines classroom experiences with hands-on learning.

“A lot of these students, their parents could not afford to send them to a STEM camp for a week. So there’s no expenses for the families, for the students to attend. So it really is us giving back, paying it forward, for the community, for these young people. Our engineers, toolmakers, they’re giving up their time. They could be working on other things, but they really are passionate about teaching the youth and helping mold the next generation,” CEO and President of Core Technology Molding Corporation Geoff Foster said.

Core Technology creates plastic molds for companies such as HondaJet and Toyota.

On Wednesday, 20 campers followed Core Technology employees right onto the manufacturing floor, where they saw STEM in action.

“I think it’s cool how they’re able to program the robot. So like precise that it can … make something exactly as you need it,” said Jamian Carrion, a seventh grader and camper.

Machines were programmed to engrave camper names on a piece of aluminum, giving them a little souvenir to take home.

The company is hopeful that they are inspiring the next generation of STEM workers.

“STEM is very impactful, not just from a financial standpoint … These are careers versus jobs. When they have a STEM career, they are a higher paying job with much more opportunities for growth. And I think that’s the important piece that we’re trying to plant that you have to have opportunities, but you need exposure,”Foster said.

Organizers say it only takes one “spark” to create a lifelong interest in the sciences.

“I know whatever I … want to be in the future, STEM will probably be a good a good part about what it will be. So I was looking forward to it,” said Jadaloin Carrion, a freshman in high school and a camper.

This was Core Technology’s last “Molding Kids for Success” camp this summer. They will offer tours for students in October for Manufacturing Month.
