Three masked fled a property in Co Antrim after one of the intruders was struck on the head with an iron.
A male occupant was also injured during the aggravated burglary in Newtownabbey on Sunday evening.
The suspects forced their way inside the house in the Whitewell Road area shortly after 11.30pm.
However, PSNI Detective Sergeant McVeagh said the man who lives there saw them coming.
“Upon seeing the men make their way up the stairs, [he] struck one of them over the head with an iron,” they added.
“The intruders, who were all dressed in dark coloured clothing, gloves, face coverings, and hoods, began to retreat down the stairs, swinging a number of weapons at the occupant.
“They were then reported to have fled from the property in the direction of the Antrim Road.”
The occupant was taken to hospital for treatment for injuries to his head, finger and forearms following the incident.
