Brits are known for their love of holidays abroad, often seeking out sunnier climates and exotic landscapes.

However, the UK is home to a wealth of stunning locations that are not only popular with tourists but also loved by those who live there. From Cornwall’s sandy beaches to Wales’ towering mountains, the Lake District’s serene lakes, and the rugged moors in the north, the UK offers an array of natural beauty.

A survey conducted by Garrington Property Finders unveiled the best places to live in England and Wales back in 2024. The guide ranked the top 10 locations from over 1,400 towns, cities, and villages based on five selection criteria: natural beauty and flood risk, wellbeing, heritage, schools and employment, plus value for money.

“If you’re considering a move this year, our Best Places to Live 2024 guide can help you identify places in the area you’re interested in that offer the optimum blend of quality of life and strong value,” said Garrington Property Finders.

Topping the list was Twyford in Berkshire, praised for its proximity to London, making it an ideal location for commuters. The second and third spots were also occupied by locations within commuting distance to the capital, reports the Express.

However, the fourth spot went to a picturesque town in Derbyshire – New Mills. Garrington Property Finders have hailed New Mills in Derbyshire as the Midlands’ top place to live, with its stunning views over The Torrs gorge and its vibrant community spirit. “The highest ranked location in the Midlands is fourth-placed New Mills in Derbyshire.”

According to Garrington, the beloved Peak District town not only offers beautiful vistas but also a charming collection of independent shops, buzzy cafés and welcoming pubs. “The Peak District town enjoys commanding views of a natural rocky gorge known as The Torrs and boasts a mix of independent shops, cafés and pubs, as well as a lively programme of events and a thriving arts scene.”

Those seeking a life closer to nature and outdoor adventures will find their dream spot on the cusp of the Peak District National Park.

Tourism experts at Visit Peak District and Derbyshire are praising New Mills for its standout location, remarking on its position high above the dramatic Torrs gorge. “The vibrant town of New Mills is set in an area of spectacular natural beauty, standing high above a natural rocky gorge known as The Torrs, where the River Sett joins the River Goyt.”

Visitors can expect a warm welcome, as the town is dotted with historic viaducts and mill buildings while offering a rich schedule of cultural happenings. “Punctuated by impressive viaducts and historic mill buildings, the town boasts a mix of independent shops, cafés and pubs, a lively programme of events and a thriving arts scene.”

Adventure-seekers and history buffs alike can explore the remarkable riverside park that sits beneath the bustling town centre. “The Torrs Riverside Park, known as the park ‘under the town’, is a superb place to walk, picnic and learn about the natural and industrial history of the area.”

New Mills’ past is deeply rooted in its landscape and economy, from its agricultural foundations to its pivotal role in the coal and cotton industries. “Historically, the economy of New Mills has relied on agriculture and coal mining to keep it ticking over, and during the 19th century, the village was also a prominent cotton-spinning location,” All Things Peak District comments.

“If you’re considering a move this year, our Best Places to Live 2024 guide can help you identify places in the area you’re interested in that offer the optimum blend of quality of life and strong value,” suggested Garrington Property Finders.

“Our data analysts have identified more than 1,400 cities, towns and villages across England and Wales that all score highly in at least one of five selection criteria – natural beauty and flood risk, wellbeing, heritage, schools and employment plus value for money.”

Twyford in Berkshire grabs the headline as the frontrunner, largely thanks to its handy location for London commuters. Similarly, the locations that secured the silver and bronze positions also earned their spots for their commute-friendly distances.

“Because of its important textile heritage, a large part of New Mills became a Conservation Area back in the 1980s. “As New Mills’ popularity grows, not just as a residential hub but also among tourists, it’s continuously adapting.

“The historic stone buildings and former mills are now buzzing with artisanal pubs and welcoming neighbourhood eateries and watering holes.”

The town also boasts its claim to fame as the birthplace of confectionery giant Swizzels-Matlow, home to classic sweet treats like love hearts and drumsticks.

Plus, New Mills is a hit with Manchester’s working crowd, offering an approximate 40-minute commute by train. Rightmove reports that properties in New Mills have seen an average sale price of £303,602 over the past twelve months.
