An American woman living in the UK has shared her confusion after learning of one common thing many British people do.

Lisa Dollan lives in Leeds, West Yorkshire and moved to the UK from the United States. With over a million followers and a staggering 51.6 million likes on TikTok, Lisa often shares her observations on the differences between American and British cultures.

Her latest revelation has left her baffled: the tendency of Brits to casually browse Rightmove, the UK’s leading property website. In a recent TikTok clip, Lisa recounted a conversation with a British friend who mentioned spotting a house on Rightmove.

When Lisa inquired if her friend was planning to move, the response was that they “just casually look at Rightmove” – a habit they indulge in daily. Lisa’s bewilderment is palpable: “Why? Where are you going?”

Her friend’s reply only added to the confusion, stating they had no particular reason or plans to move. The video sparked a wave of admissions from British viewers, who confessed to similarly browsing Rightmove out of curiosity.

It seems that, for many Brits, Rightmove has become a guilty pleasure, a way to satisfy their nosy nature and peek into the lives of others. Lisa also had a chat with her husband, who revealed their neighbours were relocating, information he too gleaned from Rightmove.

Perplexed, Lisa questioned her husband’s use of the property website, to which he responded, “everyone’s on Rightmove”. She found it odd, remarking: “This is the second British person in my life saying that they just randomly look at houses that are for sale on Rightmove or a house that has been bought.”

Expressing her bemusement further, the expat asked: “Why are you all looking at houses? I don’t get it, let me know.” The TikTok, which she uploaded on February 16 , has amassed 867,600 views, 63,400 likes, and drawn in over 8,600 comments.

Many TikTokers chimed in with explanations about Brits’ enthusiasm for perusing Rightmove. The top comment on her video humorously said: “Brit here and love Rightmove. It’s a legal way to be nosey lol. Also go on Rightmove when someone moves to see how much they paid/sold their house for lol.”

Another user claimed nostalgia as the reason, admitting: “Looking on Rightmove at houses you can’t afford is the adult equivalent of circling all the toys you want in the Argos catalogue.” A third commenter confessed: “We’re all looking on Rightmove. I usually give myself a £20mil budget when I have 20p in the bank so I know what to expect when I win the lotto.”

Many confessed to browsing Rightmove out of curiosity, peeking at their ideal homes, or snooping around properties for sale in their area. One commenter quipped: “If a house is for sale on my street, I’m straight onto Rightmove to look inside.”

Similarly, another chimed in: “Any time a house near me goes up for sale I have a little snoop at their house on Rightmove, even better if it has a floor plan.”
