Frelinghuysen Township residents have concerns about a proposal for the first cannabis manufacturing site of its kind to open in Warren County, according to the Frelinghuysen Township mayor.
One Faith Wellness LLC wants to build two greenhouses as part of its business to grow and harvest cannabis products and ship them products to external sites for additional processing, public documents state. Retail sales would be permitted on the site and the site would be restricted from public access.
Frelinghuysen Township sold the property proposed for cannabis manufacturing to One Faith Wellness in 2023 for approximately $1.4 million, Mayor Keith Ramos confirmed. The townshp took possession of the vacant site on Muller Road near Route 94 in a tax proceeding, Ramos said. A portion of the money generated from the sale was used to fund renovations to the township’s new volunteer fire department, he said.
The business is across from the Yellow Frame Church Sunday School and would include a smaller building for processing cannabis, Ramos confirmed. Local opposition to the proposal has gained momentum since the start of the summer, township records show.
“It’s contentious,” Ramos said. The mayor declined to discuss the matter with a reporter in detail while it remains under review by the township’s land use board.
An audience of “concerned residents of Frelinghuysen” packed a township municipal meeting to hear testimony from the township’s civil engineer — the night’s only witness — on Oct. 7.
Much of the discussion was concentrated on the feasibility of a proposal to develop a vacant lot near a wetland area across the road from One Faith Wellness’ 30-acre parcel.
If the developer’s plans are recommended by the land use board and approved by township lawmakers, the business would be the first cannabis manufacturing site of its kind to open in Warren County. A representative for One Faith Wellness LLC did not respond to emails for a comment.
The Frelinghuysen Land Use Board is scheduled to reconvene to discuss the developers’ proposal on Nov. 4.
