I received a message from a listener that the Copper Caboose has suddenly closed its doors.
The news spread quickly across social media, with several employees saying they showed up for work only to find themselves locked out.
At this time, we haven’t been able to confirm details. It’s unclear if the closure is temporary or permanent.
The Mystery Behind the Closure
When restaurants close abruptly, the reason is sometimes tied to city inspections or compliance issues. That doesn’t seem to be the case here.
The Copper Caboose scored an impressive 94 for the restaurant and 99 for the bar during inspections earlier this August. Those are stellar scores by any measure.
A Lubbock Favorite for Generations
For many of us in Lubbock, the Copper Caboose is more than just a restaurant — it’s a place filled with memories.
Yes, the 50th Street Caboose represented the next big step forward, but the original Copper was always home for Monday Night Football, pre-concert beers, and baskets of chips with friends.
From Campus to Villa Drive
The Copper Caboose originally opened across from Texas Tech before moving to its Villa Drive location just off Avenue Q.
Ironically, the move happened not long after our own radio station relocated from Villa Drive to 82nd Street.
Could This Be Just a Staff Turnover?
While official details are scarce, at least one source has suggested this is a total staff turnover rather than a permanent shutdown. If true, it could mean the Copper Caboose will reopen under the same name very soon.
Why This Story Matters
Just recently, I wrote about how much I enjoyed revisiting the 50th Street Caboose and reminded folks not to sleep on their excellent Tex-Mex food and party atmosphere.

All of that energy and flavor was first pioneered by the Copper Caboose. That’s why so many people are hoping this is not the end — but rather a chance for the Copper to come back stronger than ever.
