Oblique Seville broke Jamaica’s near decade-long global men’s 100m gold drought after he ran a sublime personal best 9.77 seconds (0.3m/s) to win the men’s 100m final at the Tokyo World Athletics Championships on Sunday.

It was gold and silver for Jamaica as Kishane Thompson repeated his second place from last year’s Olympic Games with 9.82 seconds, with American defending champion Noah Lyles settling for the bronze with a season’s best 9.89 seconds.

After coming agonizingly close to a medal so many times, it was Seville’s time to shine as he beat his previous best of 9.81 seconds to become the first Jamaican man to win a global 100m men’s gold medal since Usain Bolt at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Seville is the fourth World Championships men’s 100m champion to be conditioned by Glen Mills after Kim Collins in 2003, Bolt on three occasions, and Blake in 2011.

After just getting through the first round on the first day, Seville looked supreme in the semi-finals, winning from lane eight to becoming the fifth fastest Jamaican man over the distance, ironically just behind Thompson’s 9.75 seconds.

Seville was fourth in 2022 in Eugene, Oregon and again in Budapest a year later.
