Athletics: Nafi Thiam wins third heptathlon title in a row
It’s time for the second heat of the women’s heptathlon 800m with Belgium’s defending champion Nafissatou Thiam leading the way.
Thiam’s lead over world champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson is 121 points – which is around 8 seconds.
So the Brit needs to finish ahead by that margin to overtake her for gold.
Johnson-Thompson is in second as they take the bell. More importantly, Thiam is about three seconds behind. The Brit needs a big kick.
And here’s the kick. She’s got Anna Hall ahead of her on the track to aim for to help drag her across the line!
2:04 ish for a PB… where does Thiam come? Around 2:11!
That should be enough for Nafi Thiam to win gold for a third straight time!
It’s in! 2:10.62 and Nafissatou Thiam is a three-time Olympic heptathlon champion.
Switzerland’s Annik Kälin might have done enough to hold on the bronze from Belgium’s Noor Vidts… has she?
Thiam wins gold on 6880 points. The first athlete, man or woman, to win a combined event three times at the Olympic Games.
Johnson-Thompson silver on 6844.
And Noor Vidts makes it a Belgian one-three on 6707.
