(ABC 6 News) – Copper-containing liquid leaked into a drainage ditch near Garner, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
The DNR says it was caused by a broken pipe at the Zinpro facility at around 7 a.m. on Thursday, August 28th. About 700 gallons of the liquid flowed into an on-site storm drain before discharging into a drainage ditch.
Cleanup efforts are underway and the ditch has been dammed one mile downstream of the leak to prevent further spread. Dead fish have been confirmed in Drainage Ditch 81 between the facility and Sioux Avenue in Garner.
Residents should avoid contact with water in that ditch.
