‘I bought £10 box from charity shop and struck gold when I opened it’

A man has shared his delight after coming across a gold mine when searching through old and unwanted items in a charity shop – and he got the last laugh on so-called experts after reselling it online

While everyone wishes to strike gold when shopping in a charity shop, not many people come away with the treasure trove of their dreams. But one man has been celebrating after buying an unassuming tin for £10 only to discover it was full of rare and collectible coins.

After taking a “little look” inside the box, he decided it was worth the £10 risk as he spotted a number of old coins and wondered if they were worth anything. In a TikTok video, he admitted he doesn’t know much about coins and asked his followers to let him know their thoughts. Much to his disappointment, he received numerous comments telling him they’re practically worthless and would only bring him £25 if he’s lucky.

However, undeterred, he completed his own research and listed one of the ‘rarer’ coins on eBay to see whether it would earn him a profit.

He said: “The individual coin that I listed has now in fact sold – making me well in profit from this coin.”

Much to his delight, his 1889 Victoria Jubilee Head Silver Crown coin earned him a whopping £80 on eBay, a price he was more than happy to come away with from a £10 charity shop find.

The coin features Saint George slaying the Dragon by Benedetto Pistrucci on one side and Queen Victoria’s Jubilee portrait by Joseph Edgar Boehm on the other.

Describing the coin, the Royal Mint states: “The young Victoria inherited the throne in 1837 at the age of 18. Her reign would last for more than 63 years, a Victorian-era characterised by unprecedented change and progress.

“As queen and empress, Queen Victoria saw the British Empire spread far and wide, and when she died in 1901, almost a quarter of the world’s population used coins that bore her portrait.”

As he isn’t a coin collector, he ended up donating his other coins to one of his followers who was delighted to add them to their collection.

Commenting on his video, one user said: “Well done! Coins before 1947 have a higher silver content so have generally higher value, also depending on how many coins were minted! You did well.”

Another user added: “Well done matey! Brilliant sale really chuffed for you.”

A third user said: “Amazing! Well done. Bet you’re glad you didn’t listen to the experts!” One more user added: “Nice one!”

It comes after a woman discovered an extra treat inside a £1.50 Gucci handbag she found in a charity shop.

She shared her delight over the discovery on social media as she urged people to take their time when browsing through old or unwanted items.
