    Houghton Football Retains Copper Bowl – Saturday Sports Wrap

    High School

    In high school football last evening…

    • Houghton routed Hancock 43-8, and claimed the Copper Bowl for the third straight year.
    • Calumet spotted L’Anse an early touchdown, then roared to a 51-6 victory. Connor Kemppainen scored on a 24-yard run on the Purple Hornets’ opening drive. The Copper Kings proceeded to score on their next seven possessions, with two-yard runs by Trent Halonen and Nathan Thyrion, 38 and 31-yard runs by Ben Anderson, punt returns of 35 and 65 yards for touchdowns by Peter Eskola, and a 22-yard Anderson field goal to close the first half. Calumet turned most of the second half over to the reserves, with the final score of the game coming on a 95-yard touchdown run by backup quarterback Tyler Halonen. Eskola also intercepted a pass near the goal line to turn back a second-half L’Anse drive. Anderson rushed for 154 yards on just nine attempts. Kemppainen ran for 88 yards for the Purple Hornets. 

    Today…

    • Lake Linden-Hubbell hosts Ontonagon.

    The Calumet victory should earn them a berth in the playoffs, which begin next weekend. The pairings and game locations will be announced tomorrow evening. 

    High school volleyball tournament matchups will also be revealed tomorrow evening.

    College Hockey

    The MTU hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to Clarkson last night. Stiven Sardarian scored the Huskies’ only goal. Max Vayrynen took the loss in net, as the Huskies outshot the Golden Knights 32-17. Those teams meet again tonight at 6:07 at the SDC.

    The NMU hockey squad lost 3-1 to Arizona State last evening. The Sun Devils netted the game-winner with three minutes remaining, and added an empty-netter to seal the win. Those teams play in Marquette again tonight.

    College Volleyball

    The Tech volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-22) at Wayne State last night. Meg Raabe had 16 kills.

    The Huskies play at Grand Valley State this afternoon.

    The Northern volleyball team lost at Grand Valley 3-0 (25-13, 28-26, 25-16) last night, and will play at Wayne State today.

    College Soccer

    The Michigan Tech soccer team shaded Purdue Northwest 1-0 yesterday. Jordan Noble scored her first collegiate goal, and goaltender Bri Barrows made a career-best eight stops. 

    The Huskies will host Roosevelt University tomorrow at noon.

    The Northern women’s team rode a quick start to a 3-0 victory over Roosevelt yesterday.

    The Wildcats will welcome Purdue Northwest tomorrow.

    The Northern men’s team will play at Roosevelt in Chicago tomorrow.

    College Football

    The MTU football team hosts Northern Michigan today in the annual Miner’s Cup game. Kickoff will be at noon.

    GLHL

    The Portage Lake Pioneers host the M and M Shamrocks from the Menominee-Marinette area tonight. Faceoff is at 7:30 at Dee Stadium.

    NHL

    The Red Wings will visit the Sabers this afternoon. Because of college football on 99.3 The Lift, Wings coverage will start at 12:45 on KBear 102.3.

    NBA

    The Pistons lost 113-101 at Cleveland last night. Cade Cunningham scored 33 points.

    The Pistons visit the Celtics this evening.

    MLB

    Freddie Freeman’s walk-off grand slam with two out in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Dodgers a dramatic 6-3 victory over the Yankees in the opening game of the World Series last night. Game two will be played this evening in Los Angeles.

    NFL

    The Lions host the Titans in a 1:00 game tomorrow on 99.3 The Lift. 

    The Packers visit the Jaguars for a 1:00 contest.

    In the Sunday night contest, the Cowboys visit the 49ers on 99.3 The Lift.
