Tom Collins, MP for Worcester, recently visited Mount Battenhall Retirement Village to learn about Integrated Retirement Communities and how they address the housing needs of our ageing population.
The visit, organised in partnership with ARCO (Associated Retirement Community Operators), included a tour of the village’s facilities which include a bar, restaurant, hair salon, and fitness suite.
There was also coffee and cake with the residents while topics of discussion included transport and the proposed reorganisation of Worcestershire councils into North Worcestershire and South Worcestershire.
Mount Battenhall homeowner David Sharman said: “I thought it was wonderful that Mr Collins was prepared to come and talk and listen in this environment.
“We could hear his views on local issues, and it was good that he had a really thorough knowledge of Worcester.”
Reflecting on his visit, Mr Collins said: “I really enjoyed talking to residents – we covered lots of ground on the big issues facing the country.
“I’m grateful for the time the team took to show me around the site.
“Listening to local people is really important, and opportunities for people to gather to discuss shared concerns and issues is vital.
“I’m keen that we take every opportunity to build and strengthen communities so that everyone feels connected.”
Sarina Kiayani, policy and external affairs manager for ARCO, said: “It was wonderful that the team and residents at Mount Battenhall were able to discuss the Integrated Retirement Community model and its benefits for older people in Worcester with their local MP.
“Integrated Retirement Communities provide a balance between independent living and communal living, with residents having their own front doors and CQC-registered care delivered there if needed, and access to shared facilities such as lounges, restaurants, and gyms within the wider retirement community.
“It is pleasing to hear of Mr Collins’ enthusiasm for the model, and we look forward to discussing further.”
This visit was part of ARCO’s national campaign to raise awareness of Integrated Retirement Communities among government and opposition parties and demonstrate their vital contribution to housing for older people.
