The tennis community learned this Wednesday that a fan favorite is retiring after the 2026 season.
Gael Monfils, a former world No. 6, has been competing at the professional level since he was 18 years old. Fans have fallen in love with his unique playing style and charismatic personality. He always puts on a show for the fans, regardless if he’s competing in a Grand Slam tournament or ATP 250 event.

Even though Monfils has never won a Grand Slam tournament, he has 13 career titles. He has also reached the semifinals of the French Open and US Open.

“I held a racket in my hands for the first time at two and a half, and began playing professionally at 18,” Monfils wrote. “Now, after celebrating my 39th birthday just a month ago, I’d like to share that the year ahead will be my last as a professional tennis player. The opportunity to turn my passion into a profession is a privilege I have cherished during every match and moment of my 21-year career. Though this game means the world to me, I am tremendously at peace with my decision.”

Monfils continued, “While I came close, I never did win a Grand Slam during my career. I won’t pretend that I expect to do so during the next year. What I do have is the feeling that I have been lucky: insanely, stupidly lucky. I’ve had the chance to play during a golden age of tennis, alongside some of the greatest names in the history of our sport: [Roger] Federer, [Rafael] Nadal, [Novak] Djokovic, [Andy] Murray. Even losing feels epic when you’re facing a legend.”
Tributes pouring in for Monfils.
Immediately after Monfils announced his retirement, his peers and fans sent him kind messages online.

“LaMonf… What a treat was to watch you every match. You are an amazing human being that brings joy to people on and off the court. That counts more then anything else. Tennis wise, your athleticism is off the charts. One of the best I have ever seen in all sports,” 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic said. “Thank you for all the great battles over the years we had and enjoy your last dance, my friend.”
Naomi Osaka wrote, “Congratulations on everything and thank you for inspiring all of us.”
“Can’t wait to begin this new chapter with you,” his wife Elina Svitolina said. “We love you!”

“Couldn’t thanks enough for the entertainment and energy you brought to the game… Wish you nothing but the best,” one fan commented.
There’s no doubt Monfils will receive plenty of love from the fans over the next year.
We’re certainly hoping Monfils has one more title run left in him.
