    What you need to know

    1. The best places in Scotland for retirement have been named by travel experts, with seven destinations across the country singled out. WorldAtlas shared a roundup of Scotland’s top locations “for retirees”, based on factors such as amenities, properties, ease of access to cultural and historic attractions, and the sense of community.
    2. One of the locations named as a top retirement spot is Elgin in Moray, which is the administrative and commercial centre for the area and home to a population of around 25,000 people. The town was praised for its history and green spaces such as Cooper Park, as well as its proximity to various iconic Scottish whisky distilleries.
    3. WorldAtlas stated: “Elgin is a small town in northeastern Scotland, located about halfway between Inverness and Aberdeen, that offers retirees a slower pace and easy access to both countryside and coast. At its core, the ruins of Elgin Cathedral, once known as the ‘Lantern of the North’, remain a striking landmark for history lovers.”
    4. Three of Scotland’s cities were also named by WorldAtlas as some of the best destinations in the country to retire in, and were noted for their large abundance of walking trails and cultural opportunities. Neither Edinburgh or Glasgow were among the cities chosen by the experts.
    5. Elsewhere, WorldAtlas also named Oban and Ayr as among the top places for retirees in Scotland. The former was praised for its scenery and food offerings, while the latter was noted for its picturesque walks and “compact and walkable” town centre.
