I Asked Car Experts To Choose the Best Car for My Retirement Years — Here’s What They Said

The best cars for retirees combine reliability, comfort and affordability. They should be fun to drive without overkill on power, be modern without overwhelming computer menus and, of course, require minimal maintenance.

So which cars do auto experts recommend for your retirement years?

    Honda CR-V

    • 2025 starting MSRP: $30,100

Many retirees enjoy sitting a little higher on the road and the easier entry and exit of a compact SUV. They also like the extra safety of all-wheel drive, which many Honda CR-V trims offer.

“The CR-V has a long-established powertrain system that doesn’t require much maintenance,” explained auto mechanic Alan Gelfand, owner of German Car Depot. “The model frequently makes it to 200,000 miles and beyond.”

    Toyota Camry

    • 2025 starting MSRP: $28,400

Prefer a stately and spacious sedan? Toyota has perfected the reliability of its midsize Camry over the course of decades.

It won’t break the bank either, with some trims available under $30,000.

“The Camry blends comfort and dependability,” noted Ruth Calkins-Schmidt, general manager at car background checking service Find By Plate. “They’re easy to get in and out of, they offer strong visibility, and the ride is smooth without being too soft.”

    Toyota Prius

    • 2025 starting MSRP: $33,375

Gas mileage matters, especially for retirees on a fixed income. And the original hybrid still boasts one of the best records in the business, achieving 49 to 57 mpg, according to Kelley Blue Book.

After several decades in production, it also brings that trademark Toyota dependability as well. Consider it the ultimate practical sedan for retirees.

    Lexus ES

    • 2025 starting MSRP: $43,435

If you want to ratchet up the luxury, check out the Lexus ES. It doesn’t cost as much as many German luxury sedans, without holding back on the plush interior or fun technology.

Calkins-Schmidt raved about the quiet comfort and advanced safety features of the ES. “It feels indulgent without the constant repair costs that come with many European luxury brands,” she said.
