Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) series have generated over 100 per cent returns for investors. Nine matured series recently completed their eight-year tenure, delivering XIRR returns between 12.6 per cent and 19 per cent including interest payouts. Even those who opted for early exit via the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) premature redemption window saw strong gains, with the five most recent redeemable series offering XIRR returns of 19.4 per cent to 21 per cent. Here’s a look at SGB performance and how it stacks up against Gold ETFs.
SGBs are gold-backed securities issued by the RBI on behalf of the government. Launched in November 2015, SGBs have been issued in 67 tranches. They mature in eight years with a five-year lock-in period. They score over other gold investment products due to the additional coupon rate it brings and the tax exemption upon maturity.
