Hampshire and Isle of Wight the luckiest spots this year to win £100,000 Premium Bonds prizes

An area of Britain with a population of around 2million is the luckiest place for winning £100,000 Premium Bonds prizes, exclusive data for This is Money from National Savings and Investments shows.

Hampshire and the Isle of Wight is the luckiest region for the second biggest Premium Bonds prize on offer in the monthly NS&I draw.

There were 42 winners of £100,000 prizes in 2025 based in the region, meaning roughly one six-figure prize winner for every 118 square kilometres.

NS&I handed out 943 prizes worth £100,000 this year, meaning 4.5 per cent of all prizes of this level this year were won by savers in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, our analysis shows.

There are 777,061 Premium Bond holders in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, NS&I data shows – with roughly 24million people with the bonds, the area roughly represents 3.2 per cent of all holders.

A popular myth around Premium Bonds is that southern areas are luckier – but it is not where you live that makes you more likely to win a big prize, but rather how much money you hold in them.

This is because every £1 bond entered into the prize draw has the same odds of winning, but the more you hold the more likely you are to win a prize.

The average holding of winners in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight is £7,753 which is slightly above the overall average Premium Bond holding of £5,613.

The odds of winning a prize are 22,000 for each £1 held, so the larger your holding the higher your chance of success.

Hampshire and the Isle of Wight is followed by Essex where 37 x £100,000 prizes were won by Premium Bond holders and Outer London where 32 people won £100,000 prizes this year.

Essex: The luckiest spot for £50,000 prizes

Essex is the luckiest spot for £50,000 prizes. In 2025, 76 x £50,000 prizes were handed to Premium Bond holders who lived in Essex.

NS&I dished out 1,881 x £50,000 Premium Bonds prizes in 2025 so 4 per cent of those went to Premium Bonds holders in Essex.

It means there is one £50,000 prize winner for every 48 square kilometres in Essex.

It is followed by Hampshire and the Isle of Wight with 65 x £50,000 prizes going to bond holders there and Kent where 61 of these big prizes went to bondholders who live there.

What about the big one – £1m prize winners?

In the 31 years since the introduction of the £1million jackpot prize, ERNIE – NS&I’s number generating machine – has created 568 millionaires.

Agent Million, who delivers news of jackpot prizes, has this year travelled far and wide to deliver the news to the 24 x £1million jackpot winners, including visits that spanned the length of Britain from North East Scotland, all the way to Cornwall.

They made multiple visits to Norwich and Cumbria which are this year’s jackpot hotspots, each home to two lucky winners who scooped the £1million prize.

The lowest holding this year to win the £1million jackpot prize was £100 in March, claimed by someone in Cleveland, with a bond bought in March 2023.

This is the second lowest holding ever to win the jackpot, the lowest was £17 in July 2004.
