Former Dallas Cowboys WR Tavon Austin announces retirement from NFL

Before starting his NFL journey, Tavon Austin was one of college football’s most electric playmakers. Now he’s calling it a career.

In a message shared with Instagram followers, the former Dallas Cowboys receiver announced his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday. Austin suited up for the Cowboys from 2018-19 after starting his professional career with the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams.

“No matter how hard you work or how badly you want something, sometimes God has other plans. I wasn’t sure if I was ready to give up football, and it has been one of the most challenging decisions I’ve ever made. But after an incredible ten years, I’m officially retiring from the NFL,” Austin wrote. “First and foremost, I’d like to thank God for turning my childhood dream into a reality. God has blessed me beyond measure! I want to thank my fans who cheered for me and stood by me through the ups and downs. Without you, I wouldn’t have a career. I’d also like to thank all of the organizations, coaches, and staff that took a chance on me. I’m beyond grateful for the opportunities, and I hope you all knew that I played from the heart and gave my ALL every day, regardless of the circumstances.”

Austin closes his NFL chapter with 2,239 receiving yards, 1,934 punt/kick return yards and 29 total touchdowns. The Cowboys secured Austin in a trade with the Rams in 2018, sending a sixth-round pick to acquire the former top-10 overall draftee from West Virginia.

During his stint at West Virginia, Austin became well known for putting up video game-like numbers thanks to his blazing on-field speed. Austin finished his collegiate career with 4,446 yards from scrimmage and 40 total touchdowns. He was also a finalist for the Heisman Trophy in 2012, finishing eighth in voting for the award.

Austin also played for the Green Bay Packers and Jacksonville Jaguars during the 2020 and 2021 campaigns. His last NFL team was the Buffalo Bills, joining the team’s practice squad in 2022.
