Dodgers Reliever Daniel Hudson Announces Retirement Moments After 2024 World Series Win

    October 31, 20243 Mins Read

Daniel Hudson: In a dramatic conclusion to a storied career, Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Daniel Hudson announced his retirement shortly after the Dodgers clinched the 2024 World Series title with a 7-6 victory over the New York Yankees in Game 5. The 37-year-old Hudson, a veteran of 15 Major League Baseball seasons, shared with reporters that he had returned to the game this season solely to chase another World Series ring and retire “on top.”

“This was the only reason I came back — to go out on top,” Hudson said in an emotional post-game interview. “And that’s what’s happening.”

Hudson’s decision marks the end of a distinguished career spanning more than a decade and including stints with multiple MLB teams, among them the Chicago White Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks, Pittsburgh Pirates, Toronto Blue Jays, Washington Nationals, Tampa Bay Rays, and San Diego Padres. Despite not pitching in Game 5, Hudson warmed up during the game and would have become the first player in MLB history to close out World Series victories for two different teams if he had taken the mound. In 2019, Hudson famously secured the final out for the Washington Nationals in their World Series win over the Houston Astros, earning his first championship ring.

    Daniel Hudson’s Remarkable Career Highlights

Hudson retires with a career ERA of 3.74, a testament to his reliability on the mound. His impressive 2.95 strikeout-to-walk ratio across 547 appearances underscored his consistent ability to control the game. Recognized for his versatility and skill, Hudson leaves behind a legacy of 7.7 Wins Above Replacement (WAR), as calculated by Baseball Reference. A one-time Silver Slugger Award recipient, Hudson was known for his powerful pitches and calm demeanor under pressure.

A Lasting Legacy in Major League Baseball

Hudson’s departure marks the end of an era for Dodgers fans, who celebrated his role in the team’s 2024 championship journey. After multiple stints with the Dodgers, his decision to retire following their title win cements his legacy as one of the game’s most respected relievers. His career, which saw ups, downs, and triumphant moments, leaves a lasting impact across numerous franchises and fanbases.

As the Dodgers bask in their latest World Series triumph, Hudson’s retirement serves as a bittersweet reminder of the passion and dedication he brought to baseball. The decision to go out as a World Series champion signifies a fitting end to a remarkable career, one that saw Hudson at the pinnacle of the sport, celebrating alongside his team on the ultimate stage.
