While Rick Moranis never officially retired, it’s been nearly three decades since moviegoers have seen his face in theaters. That’s all about to change as the Little Giants star is set to make his comeback in the sequel to his 1987 hit Spaceballs.
Moranis, alongside stars Bill Pullman, Mel Brooks and Daphne Zuniga, was seen in the first photo from the first table read. In addition to the returning stars, actors Josh Gad, Andrew Carrigan, Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman — the son of Bill Pullman — have signed on to the sequel.
The Little Shop of Horrors actor largely stepped away from acting following the 1991 death of his wife.
“I’m a single parent, and I just found that it was too difficult to manage to raise my kids and to do the traveling involved in making movies,” he told USA Today in 2005. “So I took a little bit of a break.”
He continued doing voice work through the years in films like Brother Bear.
In 2015, Moranis told The Hollywood Reporter that he wanted to update the line on his Wikipedia page that claimed he was “largely retired.”
“I took a break, which turned into a longer break,” he told the outlet. “But I’m interested in anything that I would find interesting. I still get the occasional query about a film or television role and as soon as one comes along that piques my interest, I’ll probably do it.”
Spaceballs 2 is scheduled for a 2027 release.
