OPP Warns of Growing Cryptocurrency Recovery Scams Targeting Fraud Victims

    April 1, 20253 Mins Read

In the ever-evolving landscape of online gambling, a new breed of players has emerged: the Crypto Kings

THUNDER BAY – NATIONAL CRIME – Canadians are being warned about a disturbing trend in cyber-enabled crime: fraud victims are being re-targeted by scam operations posing as cryptocurrency recovery services.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Cyber-Enabled Fraud Team, these so-called “tracing” companies promise to recover stolen funds—but often leave victims deeper in financial distress.

The OPP says individuals who have already fallen prey to cryptocurrency scams are now being approached by companies claiming to offer recovery services. These groups often demand hefty upfront fees, only to provide inaccurate or unusable reports, or worse—disappear entirely with more of the victim’s money.

“Some of these services are designed to look legitimate, but in reality, they’re taking advantage of vulnerable people desperate to recover their funds,” said a spokesperson from the OPP’s Cyber-Enabled Fraud Team. “We’re seeing more victims fall into this secondary layer of fraud.”

    Legitimate Tools, Misleading Services

While there are legitimate cryptocurrency tracing companies, the OPP cautions that even authentic services have legal limitations. These firms cannot freeze or seize assets, and the reports they produce are often not admissible in court.

Victims may be charged significant fees for documents that ultimately instruct them to report to law enforcement—something they could have done from the start, free of charge.

Inaccurate reports or oversimplified findings from these companies can also delay investigations or mislead victims. “Your first call should always be to your local police,” the OPP emphasizes. “Law enforcement has access to reliable tracing tools and legal avenues that private entities do not.”

    Targeted and Re-Victimized

Fraudsters frequently scan social media, online forums, or public complaint boards for posts by victims of cryptocurrency scams. Once identified, they reach out, offering false hope and urging fast action, often using high-pressure tactics to push for payment.

    How to Protect Yourself:

    • Don’t share sensitive information, such as private keys or wallet seed phrases, with anyone.

    • Avoid paying upfront fees to anyone claiming they can retrieve lost cryptocurrency.

    • Be cautious of unsolicited contact—especially from individuals claiming they can help recover your money.

    • Check credibility carefully before engaging any tracing service. Even well-presented websites can be fraudulent.

    Local Impact in Thunder Bay

While this warning comes from the OPP’s provincial unit, Thunder Bay residents should take special note. With the rise in cryptocurrency adoption and increasing fraud incidents reported across Northwestern Ontario, residents are urged to be vigilant and report any suspicious offers to local police.
