PUTRAJAYA: The ongoing investigation into the Tan Sri allegedly involved in the embezzlement of sukuk funds has revealed that millions were converted into digital currency, according to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said at a press conference that the investigation had uncovered transfers of approximately RM11mil from the sukuk funds into digital assets.
“There has been a new development — we have detected transfers of about RM11mil from the sukuk funds into digital currency. It is believed that the money was also used to cover certain expenses,” he said.
“We believe the investigation can be completed within two months. In fact, there may even be an outcome before that,” he added.
When asked about the use of the funds for gambling, Azam said it was believed to have occurred around the time the sukuk funds were issued.
“It could have been used in casinos, but I can’t go into detail because I don’t gamble myself — so I wouldn’t know,” he said with a grin, prompting laughter from the media.
Earlier, it was reported that the MACC had seized various assets — including handbags, jewellery, luxury vehicles, watches, cash, and a luxury home — estimated to be worth around RM32 million and believed to belong to a highway concessionaire with the *Tan Sri* title.
The investigation also led to the seizure of premium alcoholic beverages valued at RM3 million, and it is believed that approximately RM20 million in sukuk funds were used for gambling.
