Cryptocurrency Clash: Polish Government Fails to Overturn Presidential Veto

    December 5, 20251 Min Read

Poland’s government encountered a setback as it failed to overturn President Karol Nawrocki’s veto of a bill aimed at regulating the cryptocurrency market. The bill, criticized for its stringent measures, sought to bolster oversight of a sector allegedly rife with money laundering and foreign influence.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s push to implement the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) faced stiff opposition from Nawrocki and right-wing parties. They argued that the bill would drive away crypto firms and suggested collaborating on new legislation that balances regulation with economic activity.

The discord between Tusk and Nawrocki reflects deeper political tensions amid Warsaw’s concerns over Russian activities. Tusk framed the legislative effort as a battle between national security and foreign exploitation, a sentiment contested by those who view the proposed regulations as excessively burdensome for the cryptocurrency industry.
