Black Mirror cryptocurrency skyrockets then crashes after market launch

    September 12, 20253 Mins Read

Black Mirror Season 8 is yet to be confirmed, but in news that sounds like it was ripped straight from an episode, a cryptocurrency inspired by the hit Netflix series has been launched – and it’s been a wild ride since then.

Charlie Brooker’s tour de force TV show has carved out a niche as the ultimate sci-fi dystopian anthology, with seven seasons warning us about where our obsession with technology could lead.

From virtual reality gone wrong to digital identities run amok, the stories cut uncomfortably close to reality – Black Mirror has predicted the future nearly as much as The Simpsons.

It’s easy to imagine cryptocurrency entering this world. A digital coin born out of hype and greed could easily become a future Black Mirror plot, but this time reality caught up faster.

Black Mirror cryptocurrency hits the market

The Black Mirror Experience cryptocurrency token MIRROR officially launched on September 8, and for a moment it looked like buyers had struck gold. According to The Street, the coin skyrocketed by 300% to a high of $0.0844 within its first day.

However, in a Black Mirror-esque rise and fall, this dropped to $0.06408 within 24 hours, and it’s now trading at around $0.04067. Even so, that’s still about double its launch price, meaning early buyers are technically up.

But those are just the numbers – what exactly is this thing? The developers argue that MIRROR isn’t just another meme coin, with the project reportedly intended to allow users to participate in live streams, unlock AI coaching, and shape community-driven “episodes”.

At the core of this is Iris, a virtual assistant that – like the tech seen in Season 3 episode ‘Nosedive’ – analyzes your digital footprint.

It then spits out a “reputation score” and apparently roasts you while you’re doing it, with high scores unlocking perks like token airdrops and voting power.

Whether this is the future of fan engagement or just another gimmicky crypto experiment is up for debate, but the irony of a Black Mirror coin being launched is not lost – it could even set the stage for a future episode.

Speaking of which, Netflix is yet to confirm whether we’ll be getting Season 8 down the line. In the meantime, creator Charlie Brooker is currently working on a new crime drama for the streaming service, and it sounds incredible.
