A BC woman has lost thousands of dollars after investing in cryptocurrency through a fraudulent website.
According to a news release from the RCMP, the woman visited the website after seeing it advertised on social media and claimed high returns on investments.
The woman was initially going to invest $500, but over the course of two weeks she was pursued to invest $15,000.
She tried to withdraw the money but didn’t receive any funds back “due to a number of issues.”
The woman quickly realized she had likely been the victim of a scam.
“Cryptocurrency scams often promise quick and easy riches,” said Sgt. Wicentowich with the Trail RCMP.
“I highly recommend avoiding cryptocurrency investments as they are often unregulated and do not provide any investor protection.”
The woman withdrew from the platform and stopped all investment with the website.
However, days later, she reportedly received an email threatening violence against her in an attempt to get more money.
When the woman contacted the RCMP, they advised her to block all emails and not to engage with anyone who says they are connected to cryptocurrency investments.
The police also told the woman she should notify her bank about the incident.
“Cryptocurrency is known to be a very high risk and speculative way to invest,” Sgt. Wicentowich added. “Most people will likely lose their invested money.”
