‘Twisted Metal’ Renewed for Season 3, David Reed Joins as Showrunner

    November 18, 20252 Mins Read

“Twisted Metal” has been renewed for Season 3 at Peacock, Variety has learned.

In addition, Michael Jonathan Smith — who co-created the series and has served as showrunner for the first two seasons — will be exiting the show. David Reed will board the series as showrunner and executive producer for Season 3 under an overall deal with Sony Pictures Television.

“Twisted Metal” Season 2 debuted on Peacock in July. The series stars Anthony Mackie, Stephanie Beatriz, Joe Seanoa and Will Arnett. Per NBCUniversal, the second season has tallied 993 million minutes viewed to date, making it Peacock’s second biggest returning original scripted season.

The series is based on the Playstation game franchise of the same name. The official description for Season 2 states:

“Following the revelations in the season one finale, John (Mackie) and Quiet (Beatriz) find themselves entering the deadly Twisted Metal tournament, a sinister demolition derby hosted by a mysterious man known as Calypso (Anthony Carrigan). As they try to survive an onslaught of dangerous new foes and familiar faces alike, including the murderous clown Sweet Tooth (played by Seanoa, voiced by Arnett), things get complicated for John when he reunites with his long-lost sister, the vigilante Dollface (Tiana Okoye).”

Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick also co-created the show and will executive produce along with Reed. Arnett and Marc Forman executive produce via Electric Ave, along with Mackie via Make It Gravy Productions, Jason Spire of Inspire Entertainment, Peter Principato of Artists First, Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan from PlayStation Productions, and Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business. The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Universal Television.

Reed’s recent credits include the hit Amazon series “The Boys” as well as the Paramount+ series “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.” Additionally, he has written for shows like “The Magicians,” “Supernatural,” and “Aquarius,” while he has also sold pilots to BBC Worldwide, CBS, Tomorrow Studios, and FX. He has also written novels, comic books, and video games over the course of his career.

Reed is repped by WME, Villains Entertainment and Jackoway Tyerman.
