Twisted Metal is Officially Coming Back for Season 3, But With 1 Big Change

    November 20, 20255 Mins Read

Peacock confirmed that Twisted Metal has been renewed for a third season on Comcast’s streaming service, though it will have a new showrunner and executive producer going in. Season 3 of Twisted Metal will be led by new executive producer and showrunner David Reed, who takes over for Michael Jonathan Smith following the latter’s exit from the show.

Twisted Metal is a co-production between companies like Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Universal Television, and is based on the PlayStation video game series of the same name. The Twisted Metal franchise originally debuted on the PlayStation in 1995 as a vehicular combat game that was known for breaking ground with its 3D graphics. Twisted Metal’s latest entry was a 2012 reboot for the PS3 developed by the now-defunct studio Eat Sleep Play, after a delay from its initial late 2011 release window. Eat Sleep Play was subsequently shut down and moved to WB Games subsidiary Avalanche Software in June 2017.

PlayStation reveals some huge Black Friday deals, giving gamers the chance to get their hands on PS5 consoles, games, and more at a discounted price.

Fans hungry for more Twisted Metal will have more content to look forward to, as the Peacock show was renewed for a third season. However, Michael Jonathon Smith will no longer lead the series. Peacock stated that Twisted Metal’s new showrunner, David Reed, would not be alone. Reed will be joined by fellow executive producers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, who will remain in their current positions from the first two seasons. Some of Reed’s past credits include his work with the Prime Video series The Boys, where he worked as a writer and executive producer, along with Supernatural, The Magicians, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Peacock also stated that Twisted Metal’s second season had a “registered 993 million minutes viewed” on the streaming platform. Ergo, Twisted Metal Season 2 was the second-highest-reaching original returning scripted season in the platform’s history.

The premise of the Twisted Metal TV show draws some elements from the PlayStation game franchise it’s named after. The show’s namesake Twisted Metal tournament was the focal point of Season 2 and was hosted by the mysterious figure known as Calypso, portrayed by Anthony Carrigan. Also known by the alias Mr. Sparks, Calypso is stated to be a supernatural being that has the ability to grant any wish of the winner’s desire. Despite his appearance as a well-dressed man, Calypso is not a benevolent host, as his wishes often have dire consequences and can become outright nightmares.

Following the end of Twisted Metal‘s first season, show protagonists John Doe (Anthony Mackie) and Quiet (Stephanie Beatriz) take part in the Twisted Metal tournament. Other tournament participants include Sweet Tooth (voiced by Will Arnett, body acting by Samoa Joe), Axel (Michael James Shaw), Dollface (Tiana Okoye), and Mr. Grimm (Richard de Klerk). Throughout the tournament arc, flashbacks revealed the first encounters that some of the tournament’s participants had with the enigmatic Calypso, who appeared to them under various disguises and circumstances.

Major Spoilers Ahead for the end of Twisted Metal Season 2.

At the conclusion of Twisted Metal‘s second season, John, Quiet, Mayhem, and Stu find themselves on the run from Calypso and the Insiders faction. The insidious mastermind of the Twisted Metal tournament publicly framed John and Quiet for mass murder after Calypso blew up the spectator stands during the tournament’s conclusion, which saw Stu declared the winner. Though Calypso granted Stu’s wish in his own twisted way, the fallout from the tournament has subsequently sparked a faction war between the Insiders and the Outsiders, with the former vowing to hunt down John and his allies. John then swears vengeance on the charismatic Calypso, though time will tell how the conflict will play out.

Additional post-credits scenes revealed that Sweet Tooth, who was knocked out of the tournament by Dollface (under the guise of Minion), was dragged by a taxi to New York, which his father Charlie Kane rules over. An extra scene also revealed that Axel may still be alive despite his apparent sacrifice to save Mayhem during the tournament. Ergo, Season 3 will likely see the war between the Insiders and Outsiders escalate further, with Calypso and other characters’ machinations coming to the forefront. Given that Sweet Tooth is the most recognizable character in the Twisted Metal game franchise, it is also likely that he will have a big role to play in the third season. As of this writing, Twisted Metal Season 3’s cast and premiere date have not been revealed by Peacock.

But What About The Twisted Metal Games?

canceled twisted metal live service game details

Despite the success of the Peacock TV show, the namesake Twisted Metal game franchise is currently in limbo. Assets from a canceled Twisted Metal live-service game project emerged in early 2025, and it was revealed that UK-based studios Lucid Games and Firesprite were involved in its development at different intervals. However, the Twisted Metal game project was reportedly scrapped by PlayStation in 2024. Since then, Sony has pivoted away from its push for live-service games, following the notorious cancellation of Concord.

To date, only 10 Twisted Metal titles have seen the light of day, and the franchise is currently in a 13-year drought between game launches. Short of any offers on PlayStation Plus, Twisted Metal has not seen a release on the PS4 or PS5 consoles. It remains to be seen if the Twisted Metal game franchise will make a comeback.
