Turkey’s agricultural sector embraces tropical fruits • EastFruit

    August 5, 20242 Mins Read

Turkey’s agricultural sector is experiencing a notable shift towards tropical fruit production, with promising results driving further expansion. Initially focusing on passion fruit, Turkish farmers have successfully broadened their crop selection to include avocados, mangoes, dragon fruit, guava, and papaya, especially in Mediterranean regions such as Antalya, Mersin, and Alanya.

In Alanya, avocado production has seen remarkable growth, expanding from 250 acres to an impressive 16,500 acres over the past 12 years. This surge is largely due to increasing demand, with the region harvesting between 70 and 80 million avocados last year and setting an ambitious target of 100 million for this year.

According Fructidor, Turkey’s tropical fruit cultivation is not limited to domestic markets. The country has also begun exporting mangoes, dragon fruit, and guava, boosting its agricultural exports and contributing to economic growth. This diversification in agriculture is transforming Turkey’s agricultural landscape, positioning it as a significant player in the global tropical fruit market.
