In the face of growing climate challenges, population and health hazards, the shift toward organic agriculture has become imperative. ‘MIONP – Make India Organic, Natural, and Profitable,’ is more than just an event—it is a commitment to transforming Indian agriculture and achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2047. This transition, with the slogan ‘Bharat Ka Jaivik Jagran,’ supports environmental sustainability and holds immense economic potential for farmers. At a time when many farmers struggle to receive fair prices for their produce, MIONP aims to revolutionize the agricultural landscape, ensuring both ecological balance and financial prosperity for them.

    Grand Challenge

MIONP, an event that will not only transform the Indian agricultural system but also position India as the next global food hub. This initiative aims to ensure food security, self-sustainability, and economic stability for farmers.

The two-day workshop will feature multiple sessions covering eight key interventions in organic farming, including soil fertility restoration, biofertilizer and pesticide production, precision farming, groundwater conservation, capacity building, and seed development. It will also address the three grand challenges, and for the first time, Krishi Jagran is inviting experts to present innovative solutions to overcome these challenges:

    • Challenge 1- 50% reduction in chemical fertilizers and crop care inputs.

    • Challenge 2 – 75% reduction in chemical fertilizers and crop care inputs.

    • Challenge 3 – 100% reduction in chemical fertilizers and crop care inputs.

Need for MIONP: Why Organic and Natural Farming is Essential

India’s agricultural landscape is at a critical crossroads, facing challenges such as soil degradation, declining biodiversity, and increasing health concerns due to excessive chemical usage. Recognizing these issues, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized the need to reduce chemical inputs like fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture to ensure nutritious, safe, and high-yielding crops.

With rising concerns over food safety, the excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides has led to soil contamination and residual toxicity in food crops. Organic and natural farming methods, which rely on bio-fertilizers, crop rotation, and integrated pest management (IPM), can significantly reduce health risks while enhancing the nutritional value of food. Organic practices help restore soil health through natural composting, green manure, and microbial activity, ensuring long-term productivity and resilience against climate change.

Additionally, natural farming supports biodiversity by preserving native seeds, promoting pollinators, and maintaining ecological balance. The conventional farming model often traps farmers in a cycle of debt due to the high costs of chemical inputs. In contrast, organic and natural farming reduce input costs, improve soil fertility, and provide access to premium markets that offer better prices for organically grown produce. Initiatives like MIONP can empower farmers by connecting them to markets and enhancing profitability.

Mission 2047: Vision, Aim, and Objectives

The MIONP event is inspired by the vision of Mahatma Gandhi, who believed in organic farming, and driven by M.C. Dominic, Founder & Editor-in-Chief of Krishi Jagran, who coined the acronym ‘MIONP’ – Make India Organic, Natural, and Profitable. This initiative of Krishi Jagran is a groundbreaking effort aimed at establishing a fully organic, natural, and profitable farming ecosystem (Jaivik Bharat) in India by 2047.

At its core, MIONP is dedicated to developing a scientifically validated framework to drive India toward 100% Jaivik Bharat by 2047. The project focuses on eight key focus areas, ensuring not only a smooth transition to organic and natural farming but also safeguarding farmers’ economic security. A crucial part of this approach is the “One Crop Goal of Profitable Transition,” emphasizing a structured and economically viable shift for farmers towards sustainable agricultural practices.

The primary goal of this workshop is to collaboratively develop a framework with input from farmers, the scientific community, NGOs, and input providers. Additionally, it aims to establish a grand challenge for the community to showcase and validate profitable transitions, technologies, products, and protocols for at least the 20 commercial crops, which include cereals, cash crops/vegetables, and fruit crops in its initial stage and look at their performance in the transition.

Eight Key Focus Areas of MIONP:

    1. Enhancing Farm Yard Manure Quality & Efficiency

    2. Restoring Soil Fertility

    3. Technologies for Maintaining and Improving Crop Yields

    4. Reducing Water Consumption and Restoring Groundwater Table

    5. Efficient Crop Care Through Biological Pesticides & Natural Repellents

    6. Precision Farming

    7. Capacity building for testing of inputs and output (produce) for Organic produce

    8. Organic/desi seed development and utilization

These eight key focus areas have been thoughtfully derived by the Krishi Jagran team with support from ICAR to focus on all the core levels required to shift India to an organic and natural agricultural system and achieve the following objectives-

    1. Policy Roadmap – Developing a comprehensive framework for profitable organic farming with actionable insights for policymakers.

    2. Farmer Empowerment – Providing farmers with practical knowledge, demonstrations, and success stories.

    3. Technology Adoption – Showcasing and implementing innovative, profit-driven agricultural technologies.

    4. Market Growth – Strengthening certification mechanisms and creating robust market linkages.

    5. Global Collaboration & Impact – Establishing international partnerships with countries excelling in organic agriculture and aligning with the UN SDGs to position India as a global leader in sustainable agriculture.

Key Stakeholders: Who Should Be Concerned?

The MIONP workshop is designed to engage a diverse range of participants, including stakeholders, policymakers, researchers, farmers, and the general public. The success of this initiative is equally vital for both those in decision-making roles and those working directly in the fields. With key stakeholders from various agricultural sectors already on board, the two-day event will go beyond discussions, it will serve as a platform to emphasize the significance of organic farming while laying down a strategic roadmap for long-term agricultural sustainability in India.

Why Every Indian Should Care About MIONP

With the rising food security crisis and the increasing impact of climate change, MIONP is set to catalyze a transformative shift in India’s food system and enhance farmers’ economic well-being. This initiative aims to ensure that every Indian has access to fresh, organic, and chemical-free food while farmers continue to earn sustainable and profitable incomes as they transition away from synthetic, chemical-based farming. MIONP is a two-way platform, fostering both knowledge transfer and hands-on ‘lab-to-land’ initiatives, ensuring that the shift to organic farming is not only sustainable but also economically rewarding.

Challenges and Opportunities in Achieving Sustainable Agriculture

The transition to sustainable agriculture faces several challenges, including the heavy dependence on chemical inputs such as synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, which have long been integral to conventional farming. Many farmers also struggle with a lack of awareness and technical knowledge about organic and natural farming practices, making the process difficult. With MIONP, every farmer will be well equipped with knowledge, resources and hands-on training to gear up for the shift to a sustainable, resilient, organic and profitable agricultural system.

Role of Policymakers, Farmers, and Industry Leaders

Achieving a sustainable and profitable agricultural future requires a multi-faceted approach that balances environmental conservation with economic security for farmers. MIONP serves as a dynamic platform to facilitate this transition by bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, and farmers to collectively devise a roadmap for a ‘Jaivik Bharat.’

A key strategy involves promoting scientifically backed organic farming practices through knowledge-sharing initiatives and hands-on training programs. Farmers need access to the latest research, improved bio-fertilizers, and organic pest management techniques to ensure high yields while maintaining soil health. Additionally, strengthening policy frameworks by offering financial incentives, subsidies, and simplified certification processes can encourage more farmers to adopt organic and natural farming methods.

    Transformative Journey

MIONP is not just an event—it is a transformative movement aimed at redefining the future of Indian agriculture. This grand two-day event, taking place on March 20-21, 2025, at the NASC Complex, ICAR New Delhi, will focus on eight key areas essential for transitioning India into an organic yet profitable nation.

The workshop will bring together researchers, stakeholders, farmers, and professionals from diverse fields who wish to participate, collaborate, or take on the three grand challenges of the MIONP Movement. By embracing organic farming, every Indian farmer will have the chance to achieve economic independence while contributing to a healthier, more sustainable food system. By 2047, India is poised to become a global powerhouse in sustainable agriculture.
