Trade Tensions: The U.S. and India at an Agricultural Crossroads

    August 1, 20251 Min Read

In a significant move, U.S. President Donald Trump has implemented a 25% tariff on Indian goods. This comes after extended discussions between the two nations remained deadlocked over access to India’s protected agricultural sector. New Delhi is steadfast in its commitment to shield its labor-intensive farming industry.

The crux of the U.S’s demands includes opening Indian markets to American agricultural products such as dairy, poultry, and genetically modified crops. However, India is withholding access to certain GM crops and dairy due to health concerns and cultural dietary norms. The resistance to U.S. imports is seen by many as a politically sensitive issue that intertwines with economic stability and national self-reliance.

Agriculture, though forming just 16% of India’s economy, is vital for half of its population. Past liberalization experiences have rendered India cautious about repeating similar strategies for other staple foods. As a result, India’s government remains vigilant, especially with state elections around the corner. The outcome of the trade dispute holds potential ramifications for both domestic and international agricultural markets.
