These Clapbacks To Trump’s Energy Department Seemingly Not Knowing How Solar Works Are Too Good Not To Share

    September 10, 20253 Mins Read

If you’re reading this on a device that is NOT currently plugged into a wall, congrats, you’re using a battery! (But I’m sure you knew that already.)

I’m sure you’d also think that the US secretary of energy would know a thing or two about batteries.

As it turns out, that might not be the case. The Department of Energy’s X account recently put out a tweet with a link to an article in the Washington Examiner, a conservative news magazine, quoting Secretary Chris Wright on the “worthless” infrastructure for solar and wind energy.

Wright’s remarks were partially in response to President Donald Trump’s ongoing attack on clean energy, specifically his comment that wind and solar power are “THE SCAM OF THE CENTURY.” The magazine wrote: “The secretary claimed that, without proper battery technology, wind and solar energy infrastructure is essentially ‘worthless’ when it is dark and when the wind isn’t blowing.”

The tweet itself, though, doesn’t mention batteries at all. “Wind and solar energy infrastructure is essentially worthless when it is dark outside, and the wind is not blowing,” it reads.

It even got a community note added for “context” that explains how this claim is pretty false:

Summary of context: Batteries store and use electricity at different times than when generated

People thought that was pretty heinous.

People were also quick to make jokes about other things that would be “useless” under Wright’s logic. One user wrote, “just sold my bed because i realized i’m awake for most of the day.”
