RI strengthens agricultural product supervision through collaboration

    March 26, 20252 Mins Read

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) and Agriculture Ministry signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to boost the supervision of drugs and food to enhance the safety, quality, nutrition, and competitiveness of agricultural products.

In the statement received here on Wednesday, BPOM Head Taruna Ikrar explained that the agricultural products cover all products originating from food crops, horticulture, plantations, and livestock, both fresh and processed.

According to Ikrar, the MoU, which was signed in Jakarta on Wednesday, is also aimed at strengthening the integrity of drug materials and the circulation of drugs, including controlling the antimicrobial resistance in humans and animals.

“Specifically for the development of original Indonesian medicines, the potential can reach Rp300 trillion (around US$18 billion) every year. We are committed to supporting the development of original Indonesian medicines and fresh food,” he stated.

Another goal of the MoU is to establish cooperation to increase the capacity of business players, especially those who produce and distribute medicines and food derived from agricultural products.

In the same statement, Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman remarked that collaboration with the BPOM presents a significant opportunity for the community.

He noted that President Prabowo Subianto directed the establishment of one cooperative in each village, which was intended to include a drug store.

“To this end, we need synergy and dissemination of information on regulations, policies, and the supervision standards of the BPOM in ensuring nutritious food, standardized herbal medicines, and safe cosmetics circulating in the community,” he remarked.

The ministry is ready to support the BPOM in supervising the development of domestic herbal medicines that are competitive and affordable for the community and have guaranteed quality and benefits to boost the economy.
