‘Reduce’ energy bills by up to ‘10%’ thanks to simple £1.40 item

    October 7, 20253 Mins Read

One expert has shared a simple tip that could save you up to 10% on your energy bills every year

Rising prices impact everything from weekly grocery shopping to public transport fares. Alongside supermarket price hikes, soaring energy bills are placing enormous financial pressure on households across the UK.

Heating and electricity expenses have become one of the primary worries for countless Brits, according to recent research, particularly with colder months approaching. Fortunately, DIY specialists from Construction Megastore have revealed a brilliant trick to cut energy bills by an incredible 10% annually, and remarkably, it costs just over £1.

Robert Quinton, construction director at Megastore, has outlined how the product caulk can help Britons reduce expenses, reports the Express.

He explained: “Caulk is a budget-friendly sealant that, if used correctly, can play a crucial role in making your home more energy efficient.

“Applied around windows, doors, baseboards and bathroom fixtures, caulk seals small gaps and cracks where air, moisture and even pests can enter.

“By stopping air leaks, caulk prevents cold drafts in winter and keeps cool air inside during summer, easing the workload on heating and cooling systems. This tiny fix can cut energy bills by between five to 10%, translating to annual savings of around £150-£250 in the UK.

“Beyond energy savings, caulk protects against potentially costly water damage. In kitchens and bathrooms, where moisture is a constant, caulk keeps water from seeping into walls and floors, preventing mould growth and structural damage.”

Applying caulk properly is crucial to ensuring it delivers a durable, watertight seal.

Robert has shared his expert advice for using caulk at home.

    Select the appropriate caulk

Robert explained: “If you’re applying caulk to indoor areas prone to moisture, opt for silicone or acrylic-latex caulk with mould resistance. If you’re using the caulk outside, go for a weather-resistant caulk, ideally with UV protection.”

    Get the surface ready

“Before using the caulk, clean and dry the surface to remove dirt, old caulk or paint,” he continued.

“A utility knife can be used to scrape away any existing caulk. This makes sure that the surface is smooth,” he noted.

    45-degree angle

The expert revealed: “Cut the tip of the caulk tube at a 45-degree angle for more precise control. Start with a small opening, you can always cut more if needed.

“Use a steady, even pressure when applying the caulk, keeping the bead consistent for a cleaner look and better seal.”

Give sufficient time for the caulk to set

Robert recommended: “Let the caulk cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Caulk usually takes around 24 hours to be properly cured. This makes sure that the seal is durable and airtight.”
