Tomas Lindberg, lead singer of Swedish metal band At The Gates, died on Tuesday. He was 52.
The band announced the singer’s passing via their social media channels.
“Tomas passed away this morning following complications related to his ongoing cancer treatment,” the statement read. “Despite intensive medical efforts, his life could not be saved.” The message continued as a tribute to Lindberg, stating, “Tomas – You were an inspiration to us all. A true friend, both compassionate & sympathetic. You will always be remembered for your generosity and your creative spirit.”
Tomas Lindberg was born on October 16, 1972, in Gothenburg, Sweden. His music career started in 1988 with the band Grotesque under the pseudonym Goatspell. Lindberg would go on to co-found At The Gates in 1990 and release four albums before their first break-up in 1996. The band would later reunite in 2008 and release three more albums until Lindberg’s health took a turn for the worse. In August, At The Gates revealed Lindberg was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma (mouth/pallet cancer) in December 2023.
The singer noted in a written statement that he underwent surgery to remove “a big part of the roof of the mouth” and also had two months of radiation therapy. Most of the vocal work for At The Gates’s forthcoming album was completed prior to Lindberg’s surgery.
