One simple £1.40 hack that will heat your home for less – and energy companies will ‘hate’

    September 27, 20253 Mins Read

A number of households will be considering turning on their radiators as summer officially ends and autumn begins, and the temperatures suddenly drop around the country

With autumn now officially underway and temperatures beginning to plummet across the nation, countless households will be contemplating switching on their heating systems.

The specialists at Which? have revealed a fool proof method to ensure your property remains warm throughout the chillier periods following the recent price surge.

From the 1st of October, the UK’s energy price cap will see a rise of over two per cent to £1,755, adding an extra £35 on to annual gas and electricity bills for those on the standard tariff.

Ofgem adjusts the cap, which is primarily based on the cost of energy on wholesale markets. However, this two per cent increase is partly due to the higher cost of transporting energy and the additional support measures that have been implemented for consumers.

The price cap restricts the rates charged for each unit of energy and standing charges, so your actual bill will still depend on your household’s energy usage. This means households that pay for their energy bills by direct debit and are on standard or variable tariffs will be capped at £1,755 a year.

Therefore, to assist you in warming your property for less this autumn and winter, the specialists at Which? have revealed a straightforward and budget-friendly trick utilising a common household item.

In an Instagram post, the specialists declared: “Energy companies hate this hack!”

Elaborating further, Which? explained that all you’ll require is a roll of radiator reflector – or tin foil, as an affordable alternative.

They said: “Maximise your heat! Putting foil behind radiators allows the heat to be reflected back into the room. This is particularly effective on external walls. You can pick up radiator reflector foil for around £8. It’s padded and usually has an adhesive backing so it’s really easy to install.

“But kitchen foil also works as a low cost alternative. So measure the distance between the brackets on your radiators and cut the foil to size.”

Which? captioned the post: “Putting tin foil behind your radiators is a great way to heat your home for less! It’s quick, cheap and easy – a perfect hack for everyone, even if you’re not a confident DIY-er.”

Several individuals offered their own tips for staying cosy throughout the chillier months.

One suggested: “My hack is to wear thermal leggings, tops and a woolly hat!”

Another added: “Woolly Socks are also pretty good for keeping feet warm instead of radiators.”

The Which hack seemed to split opinion amongst Brits, with some claiming the ‘tip’ is ineffective, whilst others swear by its success.

A third remarked: “I tried it. Made no difference.”

However, another user insisted: “I personally feel at least 3C difference.”
